China Mobile Communications Corporation, also known as China Mobile or CMCC, is the largest mobile phone operator in China. A state-owned enterprise, it was spun off from China Telecom in 1997 and now has a 67.5 percent share of the competitive mainland Chinese mobile market. China Mobile has a registered capital of 51.8 billion yuan and assets of more than 400 billion yuan.
China Mobile's principal activity is providing mobile telecommunications and related services in 31 provinces, autonomous regions and directly administered municipalities in the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong. Its global system for mobile communications (GSM), global roaming services cover 237 countries and regions and its general packet radio service (GPRS) roaming services cover 179 countries and regions. As of 2008, the total number of subscribers reached 457 million.
China Mobile also provides voice value-added services and data businesses. Its data businesses mainly include short message services (SMS), wireless application protocol (WAP), color ring, and multimedia messaging service (MMS). It has also developed other data products, such as java applications, interactive voice response (IVR), and personal information manager (PIM).
In January 2009, China Mobile was awarded China standard TD-SCDMA (Time Division-Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access) license to expand its business to 3G mobile communication.
China Mobile also owns Paktel in Pakistan, and in May 2008 the company took over China Tietong, the third largest broadband Internet service provider in China.
